10 plant-based Vancouver restaurants with dog-friendly patios

Enjoy vegan food with your pup at these Vancouver plant-based faves with dog-friendly outdoor space.

Compared to most Canadian cities, Vancouver is a growing vegan village for those that like to eat out. Our local chefs and culinary creatives have definitely raised the bar in unique, plant-based menus, and what better way to enjoy these dishes than with your pup by your side?

Many of our readers eat vegan, and some even feed their four-legged friends a vegan diet too, so we compiled a list of plant-based restaurants around Vancouver that love when our furry friends join us. Although dogs aren't allowed inside premises where food is being prepared or served, as per B.C. Public Health regulations, many Vancouver businesses take pride in being inclusive of our four-legged friends, and have outside seating areas with space to keep your pup close to you. As fall closes in, we have to grab as much patio time as we can, and these 10 outdoor options for vegan noshing are perfect for your pup to join you.

Arguably the most popular plant-based spot in town, the list of MeeT on Main’s awards and top Best Of honours are almost as long as their menu. The three Vancouver restaurant veterans who began this concept are helping transition the mainstream public into eating a more plant-based diet.

Dogs are always seen on MeeT’s lively patio, where they are served their own bowl, and join their owners for comfort food in the heart of Main Street.

Address: 4288 Main Street, Vancouver BC V5V 3P9

“We love dogs! I wish they could come all the way inside!” says Ben, who serves some of the yummiest cold-pressed juice in the city. This café spinoff of The Juice Trucks that roam Vancouver also serves healthy lunch bowls, salads, and parfaits.

Dogs are regularly seen lounging around The Juice Truck, taking in the cool vegan vibe of Mount Pleasant.

Address: 28 West 5th Ave, Vancouver BC V5Y 1H5

Tel: (604) 260-6943

3. Kokomo

This is your destination for creative and colourful bowls of vegan goodness, from beet poke to soy shawarma. Kokomo is all about the energy of the sun - in life and food - so you better bet their patio locations are the place to bask for you and your pup.

Kokomo also serves a mean vegan soft serve that you can share if your dog loves ice cream for a special treat (what dog doesn’t?). Two locations provide pup friendly patios to enjoy.

Kitsilano:

Address:2028 Vine Street, Vancouver BC V6K 3K1

Tel: (604) 428-5017

North Vancouver:

Address: 3270 Edgemont Blvd., North Vancouver BC V7R 2P2

Voted by The Globe and Mail as making Vancouver’s best vegan burger, The Arbor carries its creativity into all its comfort foods, right down to the homemade condiments.

The best part is the patio, tucked away in the rear of the restaurant and feels like a garden getaway from the busy street. Your dog will feel like they have their own backyard while you dine together side-by-side. Now that’s dog friendly!

Address: 3941 Main Street, Vancouver BC V5V 3P2

Tel: (604) 620-3256

This long-time hangout of the Commercial Drive community serves up vegan tacos, enchiladas, and about anything Mexican-inspired as you desire. Their modest-sized outdoor seating is perfect for taking in that Drive vibe with your dog after a walk around Trout Lake.

“We welcome all dogs,” the Bandidas gang tells OhMyDog!. And seeing as Commercial Drive is abundant with dogs, your pup will have lots of company while you break for nachos and beer.

Address: 2781 Commercial Drive, Vancouver BC V5N 45C

Tel: (604) 568-8224

With Kits beach as its setting, patio life doesn’t get much better than this. The fact that everything at The Cider House is sustainable and plant-based is a win, but having the patio embrace dogs is a homerun.

This is also the place to hit up happy hour and sample house ciders while your dog laps up his water beside you. Careful though, maybe cut him off after two bowls if he’s walking home.

Address: 1602 Yew Street, Vancouver BC V6K 3E7

Tel: (604) 558-1975

This zero-waste, vegan café is run by a father-daughter team who have years of experience in the city’s restaurant scene, and serve up bagels, flatbreads, and innovative lattes like black sesame and blue lavender.

Kind Cafe’s whole drive is to promote kindness to the earth, our bodies, and animals - and that kindness extends to the dogs they consider customers on their stylish patio.

Address: 3080 Main Street, Vancouver BC V5T 3G5

Tel: (604) 423-4078

8. MILA

You and your dog can treat yourselves to some of the most innovative vegan dishes the city has to offer on MILA’s welcoming patio. The plant-based sushi creations are a big draw, but any dish will impress on a date night with your dog.

Happy hour on the patio is popular with the downtown dog set, and you can enjoy house-made soda concoctions while your dog drinks the non-fizzy water.

Address: 185 Keefer Street, Vancouver BC V6A 1X3

Tel: (604) 844-8040

“We just got a bunch of new dog bowls!” the folks at Chickpea told OhMyDog!. Situated in the middle of Main Street’s vegan row, this Middle-Eastren inspired restaurant is always hopping - especially the patio where people and dogs gather to share Chickpea’s infamous hummus.

Vancouver dogs have long circled the original Chickpea food trucks, which were so popular, they spawned this restaurant with patio tables that are always filled with furry ones.

Address: 4298 Main Street, Vancouver BC V5V 3P9

Tel: (604) 620-0602

A small joint with big flavours Planetary Burger has outdoor seating for you and your dog to enjoy vegan burgers, fries, and shakes. This is old-school fast food for a new-school world.

Located in the ultimate people-watching pocket of Main Street, your dog is always welcome, and will no doubt pounce on any french fry that happens to drop.

Address: 3088 Main Street, Vancouver BC V5T 3G5

Tel: (604) 873-2559

The ambiance of such restaurants plays a huge role, and small details like wooden menu covers really add a natural, sustainable touch that fits perfectly with the plant-based theme. Not only does it align with the eco-friendly vibe, but it also makes the overall dining experience more pleasant and unique. I think more places should embrace these kinds of thoughtful designs, enhancing the experience for customers and making them feel more connected to the restaurant's values.
