6 New Year’s Resolutions you can make for you and your dog in 2021

Make 2021 a year you and your dog won’t forget with 6 resolutions you’ll actually enjoy making.

Perhaps more than ever before, we've all been counting down to the end of 2020 and looking forward to the start of a brand new year. And of course with a new year, comes New Year Resolutions and, after the unpredictable year we've had, many are vowing to make the most of the 'new normal.'

Let’s be honest, most of us struggle to keep our resolutions past January. But maybe that's because they aren't changes we look forward to making!

So, we put together a list of 6 New Year’s Resolutions with a difference – they aren’t just about you.

These resolutions are all about making your dog happier in 2021, so they should be much easier to stick to!

Make 2021 a year you and your dog won’t forget with these 6 resolutions you’ll actually enjoy making...

1. Go on more adventures together

This is a really easy one for Vancouverites. Whether it’s a local hike you haven’t done before that you know your dog will love or a camping trip with your four-legged bestie in beautiful B.C., make 2021 the year you do all the fun things with your pup that you’ve always wanted to. 2020 has taught us to appreciate the things we used to take for granted, and with so much adventure on our doorstep, this is the year to make the most of it - responsibly, of course.

Whether you decide to go backpacking in the forest, hike the mountain trails or just go for a walk somewhere new, it’s all an adventure for your dog so there’s no excuses!

2. Get more exercise by exploring local hikes

With gym closures and restrictions on fitness classes due to the pandemic, many are struggling to keep up with their fitness goals, so getting active outdoors is a great solution.

Living in B.C. means we some of the most beautiful hikes in the world right on our doorsteps, and is a easy way to stay active while also staying safe.

Fresh air, stunning views and exercise your pup will also love - what's not to love? (If you're a PawSwap app member, you can find all the dog-friendly hikes in your area by joining PawSwap Premium today. There may be a fun challenge coming very soon that will make this resolution particularly easy to keep...)

3. Make a Doggie Play-Date

It's not been as easy to socialize this year, but it is something your dog will no doubt be missing as they love socializing.

So when restrictions ease, make plans with a close dog-owning friend or co-worker to get together outdoors for a socially-distanced doggie play-date – your pup will love you for it!

As 2021 still has the same message of bigger spaces and fewer faces, find a local dog park to set up your play date at – again, very easy for Vancouver dog owners.

4. Have a weekly cleaning day for your dog’s stuff

We wash our own clothes regularly but how often do we wash our dog’s things? This year, set aside one day a week that you clean blankets, towels, beds, toys, etc.

Also check for any broken or completely chewed up toys and throw them away to make space for new ones.

Your dog will thank you for it! 5. Try a new dog-friendly activity

As we look ahead to 2021, and hope for a return of small outdoor activities, this is a great, fun way for you and your pup to spend time together.

Whether it's a training class, an outdoor meet up or a special dog-friendly event your pup will love trying something different. We'd highly recommend trying out PawSwap's COVID-conscious activities when they return in 2021, including Doggy Bootcamp, Sunday Strolls or Puppies and Picnics. (Find all dog-friendly activities and events happening in your area by downloading the free PawSwap app today.)

6. Take a picture a day of your dog

Okay, this one is just for you. But it’s one any dog owner will find easy to keep!

It’s such a cute idea, especially if you’ve just got a new little puppy. They grow so fast, so this is a great way to treasure all the important moments so you’ll never forget just how small they were.

But even if your dog is older, you can capture all the fun things you did together and the many, many cute things they did, then look back at them this time next year!

(Top Tip – Use these pictures to make a 2022 Calendar. Best. Calendar. Ever.)

We hope this list helps give you some ideas on how to make 2021 the best year yet!
